Aran Islands Suite

Artist Statement for Purl Stones

During Brotman’s residency on Inisheer, the Aran Island off the coast of Galway, Ireland, she became enchanted with the wind-swept, rocky landscape. The grey rocks are incorporated into lace-like patterns of walls and, with painted circles, as markers that indicate hiking paths. In a geo-mimetic response to the marker stones, Brotman’s pieces repurpose etchings she created based on Aran Island sweater designs. The exoskeletal support is willow given to Brotman by the island’s basketmaker. By using knitting etchings to construct her shapes, Brotman combines hard and soft elements and metaphorically attempts to create warmth and comfort within a harsh environment.
